Autumn makes me think of yellow falling leaves, fat pumpkins, yummy home-made soups, and oddly-shaped squash. In fact, squash is one of my Top Ten Mom Must-Haves for Fall: acorn squash, banana squash, and butternut squash to name a few. Just chop one in half, stick it in a glass cake dish with a little water, and heat for 30 to 45 minutes. Then add butter and a dash of salt.
Maybe this year I'll get daring and make a squash soup or zucchini bread.
And when you think about squash, it's an amazing vegetable. You can press the seeds for "nut" butter or a very fine flour, and the flowers, shoots, and leaves are edible. Must try that some day.

Moving on to number three: I love home-made beef stew in the Fall, with fingerling potatoes from Bloomfield Farm, carrots, and what ever else I feel like throwing in the crock pot because no matter what, it will still taste delicious.
Can't forget the apples and pears in season from the Green String farm store: perfect for juicing or making THE BEST EVER apple-pear sauce or hard cider... sooo much better than boxed wine.
My electric throw. I love this thing and will not share it. I can wrap myself in it on cool mornings and sip hot tea and read a book from my tall pile from library... Who needs Pinterest or Facebook?
A what-ever-I-can-dig-up Halloween costume for my son. (Last year he was a pirate: scarf, necklace, black pants and shoes, and a vest and a hat from the thrift store.) This year he wants to be a cat: paper-plate mask (thanks Pinterest!), black clothes, face-painted whiskers, and my old cat-ears headband. Done! FYI: When I was a kid, all my Halloween costumes came from a box.
I beginning to see a box theme here.
Where are we? It's getting late and I'm losing count. Number whatever: Another hot tub date night. Need I say more? OK, if you really must know, with wine and a "special" book to read that's not from the library.
School picture day. This is the day you want your child to look cute, like magazine-cover cute.
And last on my top ten list (moms included!): hot apple cider with brandy. My mom loved making them on cold-weather nights. After a few sips (or a few cups depending on whether you are a lush or not) you will feel all warm and fuzzy on the inside. Alas, I'm going to have to settle for hot apple cider sans brandy, and my electric throw--there's no way I'm giving that up!
